NORDIC NIGHT

ARTIST OF THE MONTH: Jesper Waldersten

1. FÖRFEST

The sales tax for hard liquor is close to 70% in Sweden. Swedes are reasonable people, and although we like to drink, we don’t like to ruin ourselves. That means that most parties starts off with a pre-party also known as a förfest. Basically, it’s much more convenient to get drunk before you go out. Americans have their own version of this called “pregaming.” Förfest is where playlists are made, make-up is put on and flirty glances are exchanged between party-peeps.The expectations of the night are high and, boy, are Swedes in a good mood.

2. FEST

Binge drinking isn’t even a concept in Sweden, because that is the way we drink. Once boundaries are out of the way, partying in Swedish usually means a lot of dancing, making out with strangers and telling people how much you love them, things your Monday-morning-Swede would never do.

RICHE

Since 1896 (!) this restaurant has undergone many renewals, but the concept and cuisine–Swedish traditional fare meets French brasserie is still a winner The adjacent Lilla Baren is something of a Swedish Mecca for anyone in the media, fashion, or art industry. Needless to say, it’s a short leap to the art world, and over time an impressive range of Swedish and international artists have shown their work here. Some of last year’s highlights included the exhibition “Kamikaze” by illustrator Liselotte Watkins and a concert with the all-female choir The Sweptaways. The Riche was also the official bar of Market Art Fair week. As a part of the permanent art collection, acclaimed artist Jockum Nordström illustrated the figures on the walls and the menus with illustrations from his children’s books. The weekly DJ sets are another reason to stop by. Just check out the homepage to keep track of who’s playing when. In short, this is the place to start off your evening or to meet up after-hours.
A home away from home for me, you, and everyone we know.

DMITRY FYODROV

Dmitry Fyodorov, is the alias of music-creating brothers Arvid and Einar Andersson, is one of many rising techno acts in Swedish. Along with other Stockholm musicians and Adrian Recordings label mates Boeoes Kaelstigen and Familjen, the duo has become a big deal in Stockholm’s club scene . Techno fans first got to know the mysterious fake-Russian siblings in 2008, when they launched an ambitious project to release a new track every month. The success of this ambitious project eventually resulted in a gig at last year’s South by Southwest festival, and global recognition. Finally, the ball was rolling. Last fall, “Coconut Office”, a track that was only available online, created buzz, and was remixed by a number of international DJs. The latest from Dmitry Fyodorov is the just-released “Simcoe,” yet another single that raises expectations for the full album Shapeless, which will be released on February 1st in Sweden and March 1st everywhere else. Just like most of the duo’s singles , “Simcoe” is filled with gloomy beats that blend into a mesmerizing product . Samples of banging beer bottles spice up the sound and add a rich feeling to the track. Dmitry Fyodorov is the perfect gateway to the electronic tones of the North.

EFTERFEST

“Then after the club…it’s the after party…” or the efterfest in Swedish. One would argue that this is a gathering for people who didn’t hook up with anyone earlier during the evening, but we’d say it’s the late night spot for the real party animals. In summer the after party might start off with some skinny-dipping (The capital is after all build up on 14 islands). In the winter it can involve playing ping-pong in a basement, slow dancing to Frank Sinatra or passing out in a part of town too far from home.
